Sweden Dominates Tunisia 5-1 in Group Stage Opener

Sweden kicked off their campaign with a resounding 5-1 victory over Tunisia, showcasing clinical finishing despite less possession.

Sweden began their Group Stage 1 journey at Estadio BBVA with a dominant performance, securing a convincing 5-1 win over Tunisia. Despite Tunisia holding a slight edge in possession with 51% to Sweden's 49%, it was the Scandinavian side that proved far more clinical in front of goal. The breakthrough came early, just seven minutes in, when Y. Ayari found the net, setting the tone for what was to be a high-scoring affair. The momentum continued to swing in Sweden’s favour as A. Isak doubled their lead on the half-hour mark, putting them firmly in control.

Tunisia, however, showed a flicker of life just before the break. O. Rekik pulled one back in the 43rd minute, giving the North African side a glimmer of hope heading into halftime. The second half saw Sweden reassert their authority, though not before Tunisia’s Rani Khedira was shown a yellow card in the 54th minute, a sign of the growing frustration. Sweden’s third goal arrived in the 59th minute courtesy of V. Gyokeres, effectively extinguishing any lingering hopes of a Tunisian comeback and restoring Sweden’s comfortable two-goal cushion.

As the match entered its final stages, Sweden continued to press home their advantage. M. Svanberg added a fourth goal in the 84th minute, further widening the gap and highlighting the disparity in finishing quality between the two teams. The icing on the cake for Sweden came in the 90th minute when Y. Ayari bagged his second goal of the match, bringing the final score to an emphatic 5-1. This comprehensive victory sends a strong message to their group rivals and provides Sweden with a significant points boost at the start of the tournament. For Tunisia, it’s a tough opening result that will require a swift regrouping if they are to progress in the competition.
