Thrilling 3-3 Draw at Arrowhead Stadium: Algeria & Austria Share Points
A six-goal thriller saw Algeria and Austria battle to a 3-3 draw in their Group Stage clash, with late drama ensuring a shared spoils.
Arrowhead Stadium witnessed a pulsating Group Stage encounter as Algeria and Austria played out a captivating 3-3 draw, a result that will leave both sides with mixed feelings after a game filled with twists and turns. The match, the third for both teams in the group, was a testament to competitive football, offering points and pride but ultimately leaving the final group standings still very much in the balance.
Austria drew first blood in a contest that saw them on the back foot for large periods, at least in terms of possession. Marko Arnautovic, who had already seen yellow in the 11th minute, found the net in the 28th minute, putting the Austrians ahead against the run of play. Algeria, who commanded a significant 65% possession throughout the game, worked hard to find an equaliser before the break. Their persistence paid off just before the whistle, with R. Belghali levelling the score in the 45th minute, ensuring both teams went into halftime with a goal apiece.
The second half continued in much the same vein, with Austria once again seizing the initiative. Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria’s lead in the 55th minute, piling pressure on Algeria to respond. And respond they did. Riyad Mahrez, a key figure for Algeria, stepped up to the plate, scoring his first goal of the game in the 60th minute to make it 2-2. The game then entered a tense period, with both teams pushing for a winner. The drama truly unfolded in injury time, as Mahrez looked to have secured all three points for Algeria, netting his second goal in the 93rd minute to put them 3-2 up.
However, the Austrians, despite their lower possession, showed incredible resilience. They refused to give up, and in a dramatic twist, Sasa Kalajdzic found the back of the net in the 96th minute, snatching a dramatic equaliser and ensuring the points were shared. The final whistle blew shortly after, concluding a memorable 3-3 draw that saw both teams fight until the very end. While Algeria will rue letting a late lead slip, Austria will be buoyed by their late comeback, with both teams earning valuable points in their quest to progress from the group.
